Bill Gates invests $50 billion to produce airplane fuel from alcohol
Microsoft founder Bill Gates recently gave $50 billion to a startup. The investment is to produce sustainable aviation fuel called Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from alcohol.
That company is LanzaJet, and with that money they will build a huge factory in Southampton, Georgia. The factory is called Freedom Pine Fuel Plant and will start producing jet fuel in 2023.
Once the plant is fully operational, LanzaJet says it will be able to produce 9 million gallons of refillable jet fuel. It will also produce 1 million gallons of renewable diesel each year.
The company says the plant will be able to produce 2 times more sustainable jet fuel than is currently produced in the United States.
LanzaJet is sugarcane, We are making jet fuel using alcohol from products like waste corn.
The company says their method can reduce carbon production by 70 percent.
